Children & Teens

From a child’s very first library card to a teenager’s first job application, the Town & County Library grows up right alongside your kids. Our programs and our online Community Portal are organized into age groups, so every reader finds books, activities, and friends that fit right where they are.

Find your child’s age group below to see what’s waiting for them, then visit us at the library or join the group on our Community Portal.

Little Readers · Ages 4–8

Little Readers is for kids who are brand new to books, the ones just learning that letters make sounds and sounds make stories. Parents and grown-ups are always welcome to stay.

  • Storytime Circle – a new story every week, read aloud by library staff, with something small to make or draw afterward.
  • Show & Tell – drawings, block towers, dinosaurs, and favorite pages. A grown-up shares the photo and the whole town cheers.
  • Reading Streaks – mark the days you read together. Seven in a row earns a sticker at the desk.

In the Little Readers spaces online, grown-ups do the posting for their little ones.

Explorers · Ages 9–12

Explorers are kids who are starting to pick their own books: fantasy, mystery, graphic novels, anything that keeps them turning pages.

  • Explorers Club – meets twice a month for book puzzles and challenges. Build it, find it, grow it, take it apart.
  • Book Quests – reading paths with a map. Finish one and the next unlocks: dragons, detectives, the deep sea, and outer space.
  • Game & Build Night – Minecraft builds, LEGO, board games, and card games.
  • Adventure Packs – take-home escape-room reading kits. Read the book, crack the locks, and bring your answers to the library to claim the next adventure.

Scholars · Ages 13–17

Scholars is our teen space: a place to study, create, and have a real say in how the library works. We stay out of your way, mostly. Ask when you need us.

  • Study Hall – after-school help with ACT prep, essays, scholarship deadlines, and that problem you just can’t crack.
  • Teen Advisory Board – help decide what the library buys, which events run, and what the teen shelf looks like.
  • Teen Creators – music, zines, photography, writing, film, and code. The best work goes up on the library wall.
  • First Job, First Resume – applications, interviews, and references, with help from library staff and local employers.

Every age has a place here, and every reader has room to grow.

As your child grows, so does their corner of the library. Each age group has its own books, activities, and online spaces, and moving up to the next group is something to celebrate.

For Parents & Grown-Ups · Sages 18+

Grown-ups have a place too. Sages is our adult community, with book clubs, genealogy and local history workshops, tech help for any device, and the quietest reading corner in the building.

Parents and caregivers can join the Community Portal to keep up with programs and events and to post for their little ones in the Little Readers spaces. In the library app, parents can also lock a child’s profile to the right age group.
